Progress of Our Children

This parent seemed fully focused on their child and I loved how "student-centered" their responses were. I think that sometimes adults get too caught up in their own needs and wants, when really an organization like the PTA exists to help better educate our children through a partnership between parents and school staff. His responses are below:

Have you been to a PTA meeting? Do you know what PTA is and does at our school?

Yes, the PTA is the parent teacher association meeting where important discussion and information is exchanged for the progress of our children.

Shirley Igo, the National PTA President claims, "Now more than ever, the PTA has to be an organization that, not only welcomes, but also embraces diversity." Do you feel that is true of the PTA at your school?

Yes.

What would you like to see at the PTA at your school?

More of the same thing for the progress of our children.

  1. At the school I taught at we had a handful of parents who ran the entire PTA. They got worn out after awhile from trying to run the entire program on their own. We did have a large group of hispanic students, whose parents were first generation Americans, but we had a majority White population whose parents could communicate just fine and were familiar with PTA. I think we not only have to figure out how to make being part of PTA desirable for first generation Americans, but also for those who have been familiar with it their whole lives. For whatever reason the PTA was not well supported in my school.
