Teacher Interview... Can teachers participate?

Have you been to a PTA meeting? Do you know what PTA is and does at Excel Academy? No. I notice a number of student handouts regarding coin drives, school uniforms, and book sales.

Shirley Igo, the National PTA president claims, "Now more than ever, PTA has be an organization that, not only welcomes, but also embraces diversity." Do you feel this is true of the PTA at Excel Academy? I have little experience with members or cultivation of members but they seem to cater to a range of activities to support the school.

What would you like to see in the PTA at Excel Academy? Teacher participation?

Our Recommendations

In order to enhance multicultural instruction in all schools and classrooms, we recommend that current principals and PTA presidents should put specific membership goals in place to increase the number of parents and teachers attending PTA events. In order to achieve the attendance goals of one teacher per grade level and one parent per classroom, we recommend that PTAs plan events that tie into other activities. For example; breakfast meetings held before school/work so that parents can attend and children are already at school, PTA events tied to clothing or food drives, events held during the school day so that teachers and some parents can attend. We believe that by adding a variety of events and event times, PTAs will be able to increase their membership turnout. In addition, they may be able to offer incentives to parents and teachers who participate regularly in events—this may be in the form of educational materials provided for their child or classroom. In order to be sensitive to and relevant to the particular stakeholders involved, some of these decisions would need to be made at the school level. Schools may even be able to take advantage of their Title 1 status in order to help plan and sponsor events that bring families into the school—because family involvement is a part of the Title 1 program, principals may be able to dedicate funding to events that foster parent participation in the PTA at their school.
